Basic Monthly Cleaning Chores for Every Homeowner

If you have a busy schedule, you probably don’t find much time for cleaning until the weekend comes. With that said you will have plenty of chores to do monthly. If you live in a big house it is normal not to be able to clean everything regularly, but don’t postpone these tasks. Here are the basic monthly cleaning chores that you should do.

• Dust the fans
Whether it is a ceiling fan or a standing one, you need to dust them at least once a month or all the dust will fall all over the place every time you switch them on. With dusting, you will preserve the good functioning of the fan and its good condition.

• Dust the air vents
They quickly get a buildup of dust so make sure you clean them well once a month.

• Clean the windows
This may seem like a hard task to do on a monthly basis, but windows get dirty quite quickly. If it’s still warm weather you have no excuse to clean them thoroughly. Use a glass cleaner or prepare your own homemade product in order to remove all the spots and the streaks. This includes cleaning the window sill, the frame and the blinds. It will result in better looking and lighter rooms.

• Dust the walls
Many people seem to not notice the dust on their walls. However, the dust is there, especially in the corners. Go over each wall and check for spider webs too. If there are any spots, try to clean them carefully.

• Dust and wipe down the major appliances
The washing machine, the fridge, the cooker, the dishwasher – they get dirty too so don’t ignore them. Wipe them with a damp cloth once a month to keep them clean and good looking.

• Dust inside the cabinets
If you have cabinets with glass doors, the area inside will be dusty just as quick as the outside. If you don’t have time to dust there every week, at least do it at the end of each month. Take all things out (china, glass, framed photos, vases, figurines) and dust the area and the items too.

• Treat the carpet
If you want to keep your carpet clean for longer, treat little stains and buildups once a month. Sprinkle with baking soda, leave it overnight and then vacuum. This will remove the bad odours.

• Vacuum the upholstery
Use the dust tool on the vacuum cleaner and go over the sofa, armchairs and other upholstery. Just because you don’t necessarily see the dust, hair and dirt, it doesn’t mean that it’s not there. If you notice any stains, use a stain remover or a natural product, but don’t ignore the spot. Vacuum inside furniture and go all the way down to the crevices. This is also a certain way of revealing lost items.

• Change the filters of the air conditioning
This is the best way to maintain the good condition of the air conditioning and its smooth running.

• Clutter control
If you don’t have the habit of throwing away clutter, make it part of your monthly schedule. Throw away outdated food, junk papers and other items that have been piling up but you don’t really need.

The monthly cleaning tasks are not that many and they are certainly not that hard, but they are time-consuming, so make sure you spend at least one day every month for them.
